Telecommuting Cover Letters 101 and Free Resume Cover Letter Template

Why offer a free resume cover letter sample for folks that want to work at home? Well, sending a telecommuting resume without a cover letter is like flying an airplane with no pilot. It is going to crash and burn. A cover letter is your snappy introduction. It lets the employer know right away why he/she should hire you. Never consider sending a resume naked, it needs its cover letter!

And because trying to get hired for an off-site job is different in some ways – it's still considered a must. That's why I want to help by providing a free resume cover letter sample for those looking for online jobs or home-based careers. I have always encouraged people to write creatively, an average employer who sits and reads resumes all day long has a rather short attention span. Be sure to write something that will catch their eye.

Is Your At Home Work Space Ready to Get Hired?

You'll want to go over in detail how your home office is a dedicated workspace and it's equipped and set up for you to work efficiently.  If the job is asking that you have certain software knowledge or programs – HAVE them. Be proficient in them.  Make sure you have high-speed internet with anti-virus software.  And on a side note – I would make sure you had an external backup hard drive to make sure you never lose a client's files. Trust me, my blog is here to help you learn whether it's a job or business –and these are all things I have learned over the years.

What Not to Say in Your Cover Letter

Try to avoid saying… “I want to work at home because I want to be the one that raises my kids…” or “I feel like working at home will give me more free time.” Nope… that's not what employers want to hear. They want to hear that you meet or exceed the requirements for the job. That you're prepared.

Do you have a portfolio? References… even better. Though seeking online work might be because you want to spend more time with your family or have a more flexible work schedule – this is personal info you don't have to fork over. What you do need to tell them is you can do this work online and why. Back up all their requirements with experience and examples and in the end doesn't matter that you get to be home with your family – what matters is you got the job and you are prepared to do the job better than anyone else could have.

Know Who You Are Sending This Resume To

If it's a company – research them. Know them better than they know themselves. Impress them with tidbits of information that you had to dig for. And tell them why you find this an admirable company and one that you want to work for. It will not only flatter the employer – but this is info you SHOULD want to know anyway. This is important – don't you want to know who signs your future paycheck? It also lets them know that you are really interested in working for them. There are some basics of writing a good professional cover letter. I will outline them below:

1. Your name and full address with your email address come first.
2. The name and address of the person and company you are addressing it to.
3. The date.
4. The title of the person you are addressing the cover letter to.
5. Your introduction
6. (Skip a line) The body of the cover letter. Let hem know about your skills and what you can offer to the company, let them know you are looking to telecommute from your home office.
7. (Skip a line) Your closing paragraph. Insist on an interview and thank them for their valuable time and consideration.
8. Closing (Sincerely, Respectfully)
9. Your signature

Also… I personally own three cover letter and resume books – they make great references as well. I've even thought about writing resumes for others. But I really feel like you can save yourself some major bucks by doing it yourself. And with books to refer to and all the info on the internet – it makes it so much easier.

Be sure to have someone objective take a look  – sometimes a fresh set of eyes can fine tune a telecommuting cover letter or resume for you.

Yes, this is a very simple and basic cover letter, but sometimes just having the “bones” of a cover letter can really help people when they are unsure how to proceed. I have personally used my own free resume cover letter in the past, and I am not ashamed to toot my own horn… I landed several job offers! And two of the companies I worked for, flat out told me that I stood apart from the pack from the get-go just be including a cover letter! Don't mistake its value in the job application process!
