The modern age is the age of Science.It has revolutionized the world.It has brought peace and wonder in every walk of life.It has conquered the Space and Time.It is upto the user whether he uses for the good or for the evil purposes.Here are some examples to prove that whether it is a blessing or not;
To begin with,Science has made many wonderful inventions. It has provided us electricity which is used to run various types of machines. Our homes are lighted, cooled in summers and heated in winters using various electric instruments. The work of hours can be completed within minutes or seconds. We have radio, television, computer, fax machines as a mean of communication.
Second,we have access to the moon.Science has given us various sources of transportation.Today we have airplanes, jets, aircrafts to go from one place to the other even beyond this earth like to the moon. The astraunuts are discovering other planets and looking for signs of life on on them.
Thirdly,Science has provided us a happy and healthy life.Today we have cured a lot of incurable and rare diseases. It is due to the blessings of Science that we can see the inside of the human body.It has brought a wonderful change in the field of agriculture. Now we have various fertilizers and disinfectants that are essential for the crops and increases the gross productivity.
Besides its various blessings,Science is also a devil. It has introduced various technologies that can destroy the world in no time. The examples of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are before us.Man has created such deadlier weapons that can vanish the world within the blink of an eye.
In addition,it has increased the pollution and thus have negative impact on the environment. The landscapes are going towards destruction. Some species of animals are at the point of extinction.Similarly, the negative use of Internet is increasing day by day.People are more prone towards destructive use of Internet.
To sum up,it can be said that Science itself is not good or bad instead it is upto the user whether he uses it for his selfish gain or for the peaceful and comfortable life.It is better to use it for the positively rather using it in a negative way.
Science: A Blessing Or A Curse
Everything in the universe has its uses and abuses. The same applies to science. Science has revolutionized human existence and has made it happier and more comfortable. Modern science has many wonders. Electricity is one of its greatest wonders. It is a source of energy. It can run any type of machinery. With the help of electricity, we can light our rooms, run buses and trains and machinery, lift water for irrigation and can accomplish a multitude of other tasks.
Much of the progress that mankind has made in different fields right from the stone age to the modern age is due to the progress made in the filed of science. Not only material progress but also the mental outlook of man has been influenced by it. Agriculture, business, transport, communication and medicine to name a few are all highly indebted to the wonders of science. We have become scientifically much more advanced than our ancestors. This is because the world has undergone a tremendous change because of the rapid strides made by science and technology.
The discovery and development of a large number of powerful energy sources – coal, petroleum, natural gas, electricity etc. – have enabled humanity to conquer the barriers of nature. All these have facilitated the growth of fast modes of transport and communication, which have metamorphosed the world into a global village. Science has given man the means of travelling to the moon.
Science is a great help in the agricultural field too. The food production levels and quality have improved immensely due to multiple factors. Soil analysis, hybrid varieties of crops giving higher yield, fertilizers, pesticides, advanced tools and machinery, irrigation equipments, etc. have increased the production of crops. Today, we have also scores of meteorological satellites in outer space sending data and pictures to earth stations helping agricultural scientists find and analyse soil patterns. They can also help them trace progress of rains, wind and even locusts that endanger crops. Satellites even forewarn about natural calamities, like hurricanes which cause mass destruction. In addition, science has enabled man to diagnose and treat many dangerous diseases. Open heart surgeries, organ transplants, etc. have all become possible. A number of killer diseases are now curable.
Diseases such as smallpox, polio, plague, malaria, etc. have now almost been eradicated. Hidden diseases in the body can be diagnosed easily with the help of X-ray, CT scan, MRI, etc. Scientists have succeeded in cloning animals. The methods of diagnosis, prevention and treatment have developed with a rapid speed. As a result of tremendous progress in medical science, man finds himself safer and more secure.
Man, with the help of science, has been able to increase longevity, arrest the gradual decay of human body and control the spread of lethal diseases by discovering extraordinary life prolonging drugs and medicines. Science has also provided us with many means of education and entertainment. Television, video, radio, computer, Internet, etc. have enabled the human race to enrich its knowledge about almost everything in this world.
Information technology and computers have also revolutionized our lifestyles. Automation in banks and railway stations has provided relief to the public and staff alike. Ticketing and reservation have become more efficient and convenient. Internet has very useful applications in our day-to-day life. Mobile phones are the outcome of information technology. But, in many cases, this boon has been turned into bane because of its misuse. Science has, in recent times, posed a threat to the very existence of mankind with the invention of weapons of mass destruction – nuclear, biological, atomic, chemical, etc. Cyber crime is the latest addition to the list of various crimes. The misapplication of science has brought mankind to the brink of destruction.
Sir Alfred Nobel experimented with dynamite to clear huge mountains to turn it into productive land. But modern man is using it to kill his fellow human beings and destroy nature.
Biotechnology is a great boon for fighting the diseases. But along with medicines, lethal biological weapons have also been developed. Germs are deliberately released into the air to spread diseases. Anthrax envelopes are used for spreading terrorism. The negative effects of the excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides, used to increase yield, are now evident. Soil salinity has increased. Traces of DDT are found in plants. Establishment and expansion of factories has resulted in all-round pollution. Motor vehicles emit a lot of poisonous material into the atmosphere. This has led to the depletion of the ozone layer and global warming. Television, a good source of entertainment, education and information, has its negative effects too. There are many programmes which promote violence and vulgarity, and teenagers are more interested in watching these programmes. Aggressiveness and violence at an early age have led to shocking crimes. Sometimes, even the mature people learn and apply ingenious methods of crime by watching serials and moves. The power of the Internet is being abused by the widespread use of pornographic material. Lots of people spend their time in chat rooms for obscene discussion.
Science has two faces-good and bad. It depends on us which face we want to see. If we use the gifts of science in a positive way, then it will, provide us with sweet results, but if we use it in the wrong way, the results will definitely be bitter. To save ourse4lves and the world as a whole from destruction, we should follow the right way to use the gifts of science so that it appears as a blessing and not as a curse.
Science: A Blessing or curse -- another essay
As every coin has two sides, science also has two sides. It is a good servant but a bad master. As a servant, it makes life comfortable, easy, luxurious and more meaningful. But as a master, it is a devil. It can reduce the whole world into a rubble and debris in no time.
Science is knowledge, and knowledge has no end. The only limitations, which knowledge knows of, are those imposed by the human intellect and reason. In theory, there is nothing material, which science may not hope to achieve. With the help of science man has made the best use of matter.
In the primitive age, man was living like a savage. He did not know how to wear a piece of cloth. He did not know how to make fire and cook his food. He did not know how to make a hut or a house to live in. He did not know how to speak. He did not know how to read and write. But gradually, with the help of science, he developed a great civilization. At the dawn of civilization, man developed a scientific outlook. With the help of science, he made observation and experiment, though they were crude at firs. He discovered the relationship between a cause and its effect. He discovered some secrets of nature. He came to know the use of fire. With the help of it, he cooked his meal and scared the wild animals away. Then he came to know sowing and planting. He discovered the conditions for seeds to sprout. He discovered the conditions for seeds to sprout. He discovered the process for tending plants. He grew crops and stored the surplus. He came from cave to cottage and from cottage to pucca house. He learnt the art of taming the useful animals and put them to his service. He invented many things. He could grow cotton and make cloths out of it due to proper use of science. Thus the uses of science brought about great changes to mankind and its surroundings.
And now the modern age is the age of science. It has greatly influenced every walk of life. It has provided us with comforts and wonders. The world today is completely changed. Time and space have been conquered. Though the blessings of science are countless yet the question is raised whether it is a blessing or a curse.
To begin with, modern inventions have opened a new era for the people of this universe. Science has revolutionized the world. It has brought peace and comfort for the man. One of its greatest inventions is electricity. This electricity is used to run various types of machines. Our houses are lighted, cooled, and heated using electrical gadgets. In addition, today, we are enjoying a lot of facilities due to the good effects of science. We have television, radio, computers, fax machines now. We can communicate and share our happiness or pain with our relatives using telephone, mobile phone, Internet, etc. In fact, life is far easier than it was in the past. Science has helped man to conquer the forces of nature. The whole world has turned into a global village. Science has made our lives happier and healthier than before.
The gifts of science are indisputable and countless. There can be no denying the fact that science has made so much progress that life of man, society, nation and the world has been influenced tremendously. The knowledge gained through science and scientific technology speaks volumes about man’s ingenuity and skill. If all this was not achieved by science it would be no wonder that, even today, man might have been the animal as he was in the ages past. It is science that has given us all the amenities of modern living that we can proudly boast of and enjoy.
The drudgery of household work has been reduced to an almost nil by the numerous gifts of science. You have much task to do, and there is a machine to do it for you. In its social aspect, no matter where we want to go, whomsoever we want to meet, we have umpteen scientific modes of travelling to and fro. Then we have many means of entertaining ourselves with the radio, television, media player, etc. We have printed books to gain knowledge from.
As far as science is helping man to make life better it is very good but, does man stop there? He continues his so called study and research which further leads him on to the destructive dimension of science. We are making bombs, using nuclear energy for purposes of destruction. Today, man has the most destructive weapons ever produced. A bomb can annihilate the entire race. In the event of a third world war, there is no doubt that man will perish. It is to this aspect of scientific growth we must put a stop and think whose gain it will be, if the world is destroyed. I am sure it will benefit none. Yes, none at all. Production of destructive weapons is the greatest curse of science to humankind.
On the national front, mechanization has led to industrialization which, in turn, has given birth to extensive unemployment and capitalism. Machines being devices to save labour, have mercilessly thrown thousands out of employment, and capitalism has led to class struggle, the big capitalists exploiting the poor labourers.
At the lowest and smallest level of life, man has lost his own humaneness as though he himself has become a machine. He has got so engrossed in the machines that he has lost all contact with his own species who make for his live company. This live company has been sacrificed for the mechanical idiot box.
Besides these mundane and down-to-earth results of scientific growth, there is one very important aspect which has got lost. Science leaves no place to accommodate God or religion. For the scientific and mechanical mind can understand only what he sees or something that can be explained with some amount of reasoning. God and religion are two things that can have no mathematical formulae to explain.
This disbelief in God is leading to further degeneration of the family and the society, the two essential composites of a healthy nation. Man understands only what he can see and these days his vision is too blurred to see the place of God in the scheme of things. This irreligious attitude of man is further going down to the lowest ebb, the sensitivity of our very beings.
Last but not least, science has been defined as a systematized body of knowledge. Man may use it for his welfare as well as for warfare. It is what is made of it by human beings or any other that can utilize it, that makes ‘Science a blessing or a curse’ because, “Science has given us power, but it cannot give us wisdom.

Hobbies – its relevance in our life
“A hobby a day keeps the doldrums away”.
- Phyllis McGinley
A hobby is a change of activity which is done for the main purpose of refreshing oneself. It is an interesting pursuit for the sake of getting pleasure in one’s leisure time. Hobby is the pleasant use of the spare time at our disposal. We can use it as we like it.
It has correctly been said that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. The hobbies give us mental and bodily relaxation when we are tired of our daily routine. As a matter-of-fact, we must have some leisure for our enjoyment. If we have no hobby we cannot have a happy life. The aim of a hobby is to lighten our boredom of life The pursuit of a hobby is also the best method of spending one’s free time.
Difference people like different hobbies. Some like to spend their spare time in reading their favourite books. Some people have the hobby of collecting stamps or coins. Bird watching is also a hobby for some people. Still others like to spend their free time in gardening. Photography is also a popular hobby for certain persons. But it is quite an expensive hobby and everyone may not be able to afford it. Fishing and swimming are also good hobbies. Some persons also make it their hobby to collect the autographs of eminent persons.
My favourite hobby is gardening. We have a spacious ground attached to our house. I have developed this open space into a beautiful garden. I always devote my free time for the upkeeping of my beautiful garden which is very dear to me. I get a sense of joy and pride when I visit my garden in my free time. In my garden I have planted some fruit-bearing trees. I have also grown some plants of beautiful flowers. Now I have also started growing vegetables. Our needs for fruits and vegetables to a great extent are met from my small garden which gives me a great sense of achievement. I am really proud of my garden which is admired by all who visit our house.
I purchase the best seeds from the supermarket for sowing in my garden. I have also collected all the required tools for gardening. In my library, I have a collection of certain books on the subject of gardening. These books have greatly helped me in the maintenance of my garden and for the pursuit of my hobby. I have made many new experiments in my garden regarding growing of vegetables and flowers.
My garden is also full of sweet smelling and beautiful flowers. The blooming flowers of different colours greatly enhance the beauty of my garden.
Thus, my hobby is giving me immense pleasure. Whenever I am too tired of my routine work, I just go to my garden and lie there on the green grass in the midst of the blooming flowers. The sweet fragrance of the flowers soothens me and I feel very active and smart again. My hobby provides me not only pleasure, but also a good amount of physical exercise.
Scott Alexander has rightly said, “The best way to make happy money is to make money your hobby and not your god”.
